One-Day Stage Pyrotechnics Safety Training Course in the UK
Just FX provides a comprehensive Pyrotechnic Safety Awareness Course for anyone working with or around stage pyrotechnics within the theatre, entertainment and live events industries. Our one-day course combines classroom-based learning with live demonstrations and practical, hands-on training. Delegates will develop an understanding of the safe handling, preparation and use of stage and theatrical pyrotechnics, along with the equipment, procedures and safety considerations involved when using pyrotechnic effects. The Pyrotechnic Safety Awareness Course covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of working safely with stage pyrotechnics. Throughout the day, delegates are introduced to a wide range of pyrotechnic effects and firing equipment, with subjects including pyrotechnic safety, relevant legislation and guidance, storage and handling, risk assessments, electrical testing, series wiring and safe firing procedures. The course also explores different types of theatrical pyrotechnic effects and their applications, including jets, gerbs, mines, comets, airbursts, maroons, waterfalls and other commonly used stage pyrotechnics.
This entry-level training course is suitable not only for those interested in working with pyrotechnics, but also for anyone who may work alongside pyrotechnics at theatres, venues and live events. The course provides delegates with a broader understanding of how stage pyrotechnics are used, the potential hazards involved, and the risks and safety considerations to be aware of when working around pyrotechnic effects.
Practical experience is an important part of our stage pyrotechnics training. Delegates have the opportunity to work with professional pyrotechnic firing equipment and devices under supervision, putting into practice the principles covered during the theoretical part of the course. Live demonstrations throughout the day allow delegates to see and experience a variety of pyrotechnic effects while developing a better understanding of their characteristics, applications and the safety considerations involved when using them in theatres, venues and live productions. After hands on practical workshops, we finish the day with a full on pyrotechnic show.

On completion of the course, delegates will receive a Pyrotechnic Safety Awareness Course certificateand become eligible to apply for membership of the Association of Stage Pyrotechnicians (ASP). ASP membership provides a recognised way to record your pyrotechnics and special effects experience, along with relevant training, helping you build a documented record of your experience and demonstrate your ongoing competence within the industry.

What does this course cover?
This one-day course covers different types of pyrotechnics, with live demonstrations, as well as the history of pyrotechnics, flameproofing, control equipment, electrical testing, relevant legislation and storage requirements, risk assessments, and Material Safety Data Sheets.
After lunch, the course moves on to hands-on practical exercises, including the preparation and firing of pyrotechnic devices.
Does this course cover SFX equipment such as flame effects, spark machines and CO₂ jets?
No. Within the entertainment industry, the terms “pyrotechnics” and “special effects” are sometimes used interchangeably; however, they are not the same thing.
For the purposes of this course, pyrotechnics refers to explosive articles classified as UN0431 ARTICLES, PYROTECHNIC for technical purposes (1.4G) and UN0432 ARTICLES, PYROTECHNIC for technical purposes (1.4S). These are the pyrotechnic devices covered during the course.
Although special effects equipment such as flame systems, spark machines and CO₂ jets may be used alongside pyrotechnics within the live events industry, this equipment is not covered as part of this course.

The course is suitable for theatre and stage technicians, stage managers, production personnel, lighting and sound technicians, venue staff, students and other professionals who work with or around pyrotechnic effects.

Alternatively, you can host a Pyrotechnic Safety Awareness Course at your own venue, either as a public course or a private course for your organisation. Subject to the venue being suitable for both the classroom and practical elements of the training, Just FX can deliver the course at venues throughout the UK.
Do I receive a qualification from this course?
No. There is no official UK qualification required specifically for the use of stage pyrotechnics. After completing the course, you will receive a certificate confirming that you have completed Pyrotechnic Safety Awareness training.
Course completion also provides access to membership of the Association of Stage Pyrotechnicians (ASP), where you can begin recording your pyrotechnic experience and relevant training. This allows you to build a documented record of your experience and work towards demonstrating competence within the industry.
